The FI Freiberg Institut GmbH, the Association of Saxon Housing Cooperatives (VSWG), the housing association « Glück auf » Ehrenfriedersdorf eG, ioki GmbH (a subsidiary of the DB) and BSMRG GmbH (carlundcarla.de) have initiated the project « Shuttle in the district with age-appropriate assistance services » (SHIQ). The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy in the period from 01.09.2020 – 31.08.2023 with a project volume of 2.4 million EUR and a subsidy amount of 1.4 million EUR. 

« Especially in rural areas, a well-functioning public transport connection to the necessary infrastructure as well as additional traffic junctions are important. The development of economically viable mobility services for this area can lastingly ease a tense situation in urban centers », emphasizes project manager Daniel Tittel of the FI Freiberg Institut GmbH.  

The goal of the project is to establish an e-shuttle in the neighborhood of the housing association « Glück auf » Ehrenfriedersdorf eG and to combine social assistance services provided by the driver of the shuttle with on-demand mobility that can be precisely routed to the doorstep. At the same time, a high level of punctuality is to be achieved by individually taking into account user-dependent boarding times. The operation of the shuttle also creates incentives for self-determined mobility behavior and helps rural areas to become more attractive for residential space.  

By expanding the range of services offered by the housing cooperative in cooperation with its partners, the aim is to increase tenant loyalty and implement a social neighborhood management system with a permanently available contact person – in form of an assistant – for tenants. This will significantly strengthen the rural quarter. In addition, the connection in the region through numerous stops from the categories housing, social affairs, trade, community, leisure, etc. contributes to this.  

The SHIQ project will involve many different actors from the municipal sector, mobility, trade, etc. in Ehrenfriedersdorf in order to realize a common sustainable model. The project focuses on the age group 65+. The aim is to increase the mobility and social interaction of this group of tenants and thus enable them to stay in their own homes. This should also result in an economic benefit. In addition, other target groups, such as children, families or working people, will be examined in the course of the project. 

Our intermodal mobility system SHIQ makes living in rural areas attractive. Aspects such as rent increases, urban densification and fine dust pollution can be solved more easily in rural areas. At the same time, impaired people remain mobile for a longer period of time – inpatient care can be postponed to later phases of life. The barrier-free accessibility in public transport required by law until 2022 can also be put into practice by the planned assistant.
