Autonomous transport in rural areas

In the Bavarian market town of Bad Birnbach, trials of autonomous electric buses have been conducted as part of two projects: the recently completed “HEAL” (highly automated – social – demand-oriented – rural) research project on demand-responsive rural transport and in the ongoing Autonomous Bus Bad Birnbach initiative.

These projects seek to explore the deployment of autonomous vehicles in both regular transport routes and on-demand services. Regionalbus Ostbayern GmbH operates these buses, with ioki GmbH contributing software for the booking platform and for communication with the autonomous buses as part of the project.
