Vay and ioki are teaming up for world’s first remotely driven on-demand service in public transport

(Frankfurt/Berlin, 15 February, 2024)
• Leading remote driving (teledriving) company Vay and ioki, market leader for on-demand technology in public transportation (ridepooling), have sealed their cooperation
• Together, they aim to combine teledriving and ridepooling to launch the first teledriven on-demand service in public transport
• A powerful digital solution to driver shortages in the public transport sector: Reducing costs and increasing efficiency and availability of flexible public transport

kvgOF-Hopper, the successful on-demand service in the district of Offenbach, has been operating in a total of nine municipalities since September 1st. This significantly expands the service area of the popular ride service and thus improves the public transport offer. The Deutsche Bahn companies ioki and CleverShuttle are jointly implementing the flexible on-demand transport for the kvgOF.

So far, the service has been available to citizens in the eastern part of the district in the municipalities of Seligenstadt, Mainhausen, Hainburg and Klein-Auheim. Now six more municipalities in the regions “West” (Langen and Egelsbach) and “Mitte” with Mühlheim, Obertshausen, Heusenstamm and Rödermark will follow. It thus complements public transport in the Offenbach district and offers mobility with a maximum of flexibility.

The modern service, which can be booked via app, is based on the actual mobility needs of the population and runs without a fixed timetable or schedule. Passengers with similar routes are automatically pooled into carpools with the help of an intelligent algorithm and transported together. The service is available from Monday to Thursday and on Sundays from 5:00 to 2:00. On Friday and Saturday it is even available all day.

The expanded mobility service in the district of Offenbach is operated by CleverShuttle. The company is Germany’s leading operator of on-demand ridepooling and is responsible for everything from driving personnel and fleet management to software-supported planning in the background. “The Hopper is characterised by high reliability with great flexibility. For this to work, it needs perfect organisation in the background,” says Bruno Ginnuth, CEO and co-founder of CleverShuttle, and explains: “To achieve this, we rely on data-supported planning and are constantly developing our operations management software for on-demand transports. The great satisfaction of passengers and kvgOF in operations so far shows that this strategy is working.”

The kvgOF Hopper is part of Germany’s largest on-demand mobility network and can be booked via the RMV’s network-wide on-demand app. The Hopper is one of a total of five services in the RMV’s OnDeMo project, in which Clevershuttle and ioki are working together.

The necessary passenger and driver apps as well as the routing are provided by ioki, Deutsche Bahn’s business unit for intelligent on-demand mobility.

“Being easily and flexibly mobile, the Hopper is a real enrichment of local mobility in the district of Offenbach. Now it is available to even more citizens. We are pleased that we can contribute to this success with our technology together with kvgOF, RMV and Clevershuttle,” says Dr Michael Barillère-Scholz, CEO and co-founder of ioki GmbH.
