Test phase starts in spring 2025
From spring 2025, autonomous vehicles will operate in the Furttal region of the canton of Zurich, transporting passengers flexibly and comfortably to their destination in the pilot region. Nissan’s vehicles, equipped with WeRide’s automated driving technology, can be booked via a dedicated passenger app developed by ioki seamlessly integrating with the existing public transport network. In addition to the passenger app, ioki provides the on-demand software for booking and route planning of the autonomous vehicles.
Public Transport Transformation: On-Demand and Autonomous
With more than 150 successfully implemented on-demand projects throughout Europe and more than seven million passengers served, the German tech company demonstrates its expertise in delivering ground-breaking mobility solutions. ioki’s software calculates the most efficient routes for the autonomous vehicles based on demand and vehicle location. The digital booking of the autonomous vehicles, both in scheduled service and on-demand, is also managed through the ioki Passenger App.
Michael Barillère-Scholz, CEO at ioki, emphasised: “We are delighted to be part of this forward-looking project. With our on-demand technology, we are making a significant contribution to improving mobility in rural areas. The development of future mobility concepts is crucial for driving the digital and sustainable transformation of public transport.”

The project partners
Canton of Zurich
With the pilot project, the Canton of Zurich is establishing itself as a driving force for sustainable mobility and is focusing on innovation and pioneering spirit in public transport. The further development of mobility is a strategic goal of the transport policy of the Canton of Zurich.
SBB
With the mobility target image, SBB has outlined how the railway has a future. It focuses on its strengths: on public transport over medium and long distances. For short distances and in rural areas, it makes sense to access the spaces with trams, on-demand buses, light rails or automated vehicles, for example. SBB is participating in the pilot project together with partners without being involved in operational operations. It supports with public transport know-how so that innovations in automated driving meet the needs of passengers and public transport. In this way, a new service can be tested on the first or last mile and long-term complementarity with rail can be ensured.
Swiss Transit Lab
The Swiss Transit Lab (STL) is a non-profit organization founded in 2019. The STL is a leading competence network for the development and testing of intelligent mobility solutions under real conditions. It brings together society, business, the public sector and research to put innovative mobility concepts into practice.
With the pilot project in the Furttal, the STL wants to take the next step together with the project partners and put an entire fleet of automated vehicles – literally – on the road.
ioki
ioki is the leading European technology company for digital mobility and a pioneer in autonomous driving in public transport. Since the company was founded in 2018, companies, cities and municipalities in 11 countries have relied on ioki’s expertise. With more than 150 flexible on-demand services and over 7 million passengers, ioki is the market leader for on-demand mobility in the DACH region. These include lighthouse projects such as ioki Hamburg (now hvv hop) and Germany’s first autonomously driving bus. Â
