What is a railway station of the future?
Railway stations of the future (known in German as 'Zukunftsbahnhöfe') are modern mobility hubs that go far beyond the classic function of a train station. Deutsche Bahn is developing stations across Germany into these innovative mobility hubs as part of its 'Zukunftsbahnhof' programme, focused on three key characteristics: customer-oriented for greater attractiveness, high-performing to accommodate more travellers, and sustainable in construction and operation. As part of this targeted modernisation programme, selected stations are being developed into attractive transport hubs according to uniform standards.

What aspects make it a railway station of the future? 

Railway stations of the future prioritise a seamless and pleasant travel experience. The transport facility, reception building and station surroundings are designed cohesively to make the journey as comfortable as possible for passengers. This includes: 

  • Fully accessible facilities in all areas, 
  • Modern digital travel information and clear directional signage, 
  • Attractive architectural design with appealing materials, 
  • Enhanced amenities for greater travel comfort, 
  • Seamless integration of various transport modes (Intermodal mobility: bicycle, public transport, sharing services), 
  • Regional retail and service offerings. 

 

Different station types, individual solutions 

Railway stations of the future are divided into four types with specific requirements and potential for optimisation: 

  • Metropolitan stations (long-distance hubs) require efficient visitor flow management and premium dining options, 
  • Interchange stations need optimised transfer routes and covered waiting areas, 
  • S-Bahn (suburban train) stations benefit from secure bicycle facilities and public transport connectivity, 
  • Feeder stations require weather-protected waiting areas and good Park&Ride facilities.

The design is always oriented around typical usage patterns. 

 

Gateway to sustainable mobility 

The development of future stations is based on data-driven analyses. We provide detailed data on transfer behaviour and usage patterns at stations. This data serves to analyse travel flows and optimise station design according to needs. This effectively aligns stations with the requirements of future mobility.
